Dr Matthew Yalizis is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in all aspects of shoulder, elbow and trauma surgery. He uses arthroscopy (key-hole) and the latest open surgery techniques to manage upper limb conditions and aims to utilise the latest surgical techniques and implant technologies.
Matthew is Sydney born and educated and completed his medical degree at the University of Sydney in 2003. He was selected into the Australian Orthopaedic Association training programme and worked in some of the largest trauma centres in NSW and the ACT. He was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2013.
After gaining his Fellowship from Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS), he spent two years in sub-specialist shoulder, elbow and orthopaedic trauma training in Sydney, Melbourne, USA and France during 2014 and 2015. This included a Shoulder and Sports Fellowship at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney with A/Prof Simon Tan and Dr Warren Kuo. Followed by a Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship with A/Prof Gregory Hoy at the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group in 2014.
He continued his training overseas in 2015, completing a Shoulder Fellowship with internationally renowned shoulder surgeons Dr Gilles Walch and Dr Arnaud Godeneche at Centre Orthopédique Santy in Lyon, France. He learned advanced techniques in shoulder replacement surgery and complex keyhole surgery for complex rotator cuff disease. Dr Yalizis was subsequently a travelling Fellow in the United States with the Shoulder and Elbow Unit at the Washington University in St Louis, Missouri. There he worked with leading authorities in shoulder and elbow surgery. He also spent time furthering his training in the management of complex orthopaedic trauma at the renowned Harborview Medical Centre in Seattle.
Dr Yalizis is actively involved in registrar and medical student training. He is engaged in continuing research on shoulder and elbow disorders and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on the subject matter. He is a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association and a member of the Australian Medical Association.
He has presented at numerous national and international meetings, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Meeting, Australian New Zealand Orthopaedic Research Society Meeting, Australian Orthopaedic Association Meeting and the Australian Shoulder and Elbow Society Meeting.
